Forcing employees to take vacation-time is not a way to ensure that we don't lose our bleeding minds and go on a killing spree. It is however, a way to ensure that we never fully accomplish the goals we've set for ourselves by disrupting our train of thought a week at a time at four different points throughout the year.

I'm never going to finish this project at this rate...

You don't like holidays?

I don't like being forced onto holiday when I'm in the middle of important research and am very focused on the task. Not to mention the last time I was forced on holiday, I decided to finally use the time to take a trip, and I was called back a day into it because of some emergency in the department.

Oh. Why don't you take a holiday in between projects then? Can't you decide when?

I generally try to do just that. Unfortunately, we get such a small say as to the matter of when these holidays are that it can't always be a planned event. Especially if you "forget" that you still have three weeks still saved up and the supervisor figures it out. Then it's sort of, the first chance they have to kick you out and still have enough people around to fill desks.
